To Canaan's land I'm on my way Where the soul (of man) never dies My darkest night will turn to day Where the soul (of man) never dies No sad farewells No tear dimmed eyes Where all is love And the soul never dies (There will be no sad farewells There will be no tear-dimmed eyes Where all is peace and joy and love And the soul of man never dies) A rose is blooming there for me Where the soul (of man) never dies And I shall live eternity Where the soul (of man) never dies No sad farewells No tear dimmed eyes Where all is love And the soul never dies (There will be no sad farewells There will be no tear-dimmed eyes Where all is peace and joy and love And the soul of man never dies)

Oh, spread the tidings ’round, wherever man is found, Wherever human hearts and human woes abound; Let every Christian tongue proclaim the joyful sound: The Comforter has come! Refrain: The Comforter has come, the Comforter has come! The Holy Ghost from Heav’n, the Father’s promise giv’n; Oh, spread the tidings ’round, wherever man is found— The Comforter has come! And lo, the King of kings, with healing in His wings, To every captive soul a full deliv’rance brings; And through the vacant cells the song of triumph rings; The Comforter has come! O boundless love divine! How shall this tongue of mine To wond’ring mortals tell the matchless grace divine— That I, a child of hell, should in His image shine! The Comforter has come! Sing till the echoes fly above the vaulted sky, 'Til all the saints above and all below reply, In strains of endless love, the song that will never die: The Comforter has come! Refrain: The Comforter has come, the Comforter has come! The Holy Ghost from Heav’n, the Father’s promise giv’n; Oh, spread the tidings ’round, wherever man is found— The Comforter has come! The Comforter has come!

O they tell me of a home far beyond the skies, O they tell me of a home far away; O they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise, O they tell me of an unclouded day. O the land of cloudless day, O the land of an unclouded day, O they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise, O they tell me of an unclouded day. O the land of cloudless day, O the land of an unclouded day, O they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise, O they tell me of an unclouded day. Everybody will be happy, Will be happy over there We will shout and sing His praise Everybody will be happy over there Everybody will be happy, Will be happy over there We will shout and sing His praise Everybody will be happy over there 'Cause there'll be shouting on the hills of glory, Shouting on the hills, shouting on the hills. When we reach that land of which we've heard the story, There'll be shouting on the hills of God. There'll be shouting on the hills of glory, Shouting on the hills, shouting on the hills. When we reach that land of which we've heard the story, There'll be shouting on the hills of God. What a happy time is coming when we reach our home in heaven, And the burdens which we've borne, we'll bear no more; When ol' Gabriel sounds the trumpet, calling us to those bright mansions, There'll be shouting on the everlasting shore. There'll be shouting on the hills of glory, Shouting on the hills, shouting on the hills. When we reach that land of which we've heard the story, There'll be shouting on the hills of God. When we reach that land of which we've heard the story, There'll be shouting on the hills of God.

Precious memories, unseen angels, Sent from somewhere to my soul; How they linger, ever near me, And the sacred past unfold. Refrain: Precious memories, how they linger How they ever flood my soul. In the stillness of the midnight, Precious sacred scenes unfold. Precious father, loving mother, Fly across the lonely years; And old home-scenes of my childhood, In fond memory appears. Refrain As I travel on life's pathway, Know now what the years may hold; As I ponder, hope grows fonder, Precious memories flood my soul. Refrain In the stillness of the midnight, Precious sacred scenes unfold.

Today's my seventh day! It's the final march around the wall! All the mighty giants In my life have got to fall! Satan's tried his best To keep me from my goal, But in the name of Jesus Christ, I now shall be made whole! CHORUS Today's my seventh day! My Jericho will fall! My Father will go with me, And He shall give it all! My promise is for me; He gave it long ago. Today the walls give way! Today's my seventh day! The hindrances have fallen! The demons have to flee! My feet are treading on the land The Lord has promised me! I see the River flowing; The Spirit's here to stay. The Father has told me, "Today's your seventh day!" CHORUS Well, today's the day That the walls are coming down! The power of the Spirit Today in me abounds! I won't let the world Hinder me from praising him! For God is my Deliverer, And through him I will win! CHORUS I shall enter the Promised Land! I shall enter the Promised Land! With my Lord to guide me, And by His command, I shall enter the Promised Land! CHORUS

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suff’ring and shame; And I love that old cross where the Dearest and Best For a world of lost sinners was slain. Refrain: So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross, And exchange it someday for a crown. Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me; For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above To bear it to dark Calvary. Refrain To the old rugged cross I will ever be true; Its shame and reproach gladly bear; Then He’ll call me someday to my home far away, Where His glory forever I’ll share. Refrain I'll exchange it someday for a crown.

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ’Twas grace that brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we’d first begun. Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see.

Many think that He was just a man; A carpenter and teacher; nothing more. Some say He came to die as part of some plan, And every sin and stain that day He bore. But I say he came to heal and save us, And when He died, the plan – it did not end. Chorus Jesus still lives – The tomb was not the end. He still lives – He rose and breathed again. His life was never-ending; that was proved in His ascending. I know Jesus Christ still lives! The life He gave at Calvary is here for you today. The love my Savior shared will never pass away. Once you feel His presence and you begin to speak His name, Then you will know the truth, and then you will proclaim: Chorus His life was never-ending; that was proved in His ascending. I know Jesus Christ still lives! Yes, I know my Savior lives! He Lives!

about

This recording is something that I have been wanting to do for a few years now. I have done many demos of other music that I sing, but I have been wanting to do an album that is exclusively the style that filled my house growing up. This album is an homage to a few things: the hymns that I heard in churches I attended and sang in growing up, the car rides where I heard many diverse forms of Gospel music on the same cassette and eventually CD, and the many times the family has gotten together at a function and sang. I hope you enjoy this homage to my musical roots, Back to the Basics!

Notes from the Producer:

What can be said about Brent Kimball? I first met Brent during the production of a homegrown musical with timeless roots, Ramayana. In Ramayana, Brent played the leader of a group of goofy, yet lovable monkey-type characters called the Vanaras. Every night, Brent – complete with a swirly monkey tail – would stand at the edge of the stage and deliver a solo that would knock me and everyone in the room dead. Every scene he was in, he stole, even when he wasn’t trying – with that magnificent voice of his. At the time, I suspected Brent was incapable of giving a lackluster performance - after having the immense pleasure of working with Brent for a few weeks on Back to the Basics; I am certain of that fact.

Like the Ramayan, Brent is once again exploring another deeply timeless and deeply spiritual art form, gospel music. I come from a primarily pop and rock background, so what business do I have doing a gospel record? The answer is simple. If you trace the roots of American music such as rock ‘n roll, blues, soul, hip hop and jazz, they all lead back to that centuries old gospel tradition. Rock’s early innovators – your Jerry Lee Lewises, your Little Richardses, and so on – were intrinsically tied to the forms and aesthetic of gospel music. In other words, this is where we came from.

You may notice that familiar crackly scratchy sound that opens the record. This was Brent’s idea; however I fell in love with it immediately and ran with it. In my mind, I see it playing out thusly: gospel, an aural and oral tradition, has been passed down from generation to generation. It’s conceivable that many of the great gospel singers of the last 50 years learned how to do it - not from school or private lessons, but rather from listening and mimicking others. It’s likely these singers took an LP and ran it back over and over to learn these parts, thereby effectively wearing it out. In the opening few moments of “Where the Soul Never Dies,” you can hear the influences from that scratched LP transcending time itself and influencing the very modern recording that follows. In effect, Back to the Basics.
